Rock insurance has urged travellers affected by the volcanic ash airline chaos to contact their insurance companies to check their policies. Antony Martin Managing Director said that many travellers will not be covered by their insurance policies following the disruptions: “The Association of British Insurers has advised travellers to contact their travel agents as their first port of call. Whether your insurer will cover your cancelled flight and travel plans will depend on their own insurance policies. Most airlines should offer travellers either a full refund or an alternative flight and depending on your travel insurance provider will refund your premium if you took out a single trip policy. However, this is little relief for the many stranded travellers.” In the UK, the premiums are often so low that most policies are written for specified risks only and are not designed to cover ‘all risks.’ “Although we do not agree with the stance that has been taken as many customers will be left with hefty bills, I do understand why it is not covered, perhaps it is time for the industry to introduce more expensive products that cover a greater number of risks so the consumer can choose if they want a more restrictive policy for just a few pounds or a more comprehensive one that will give them complete peace of mind,” Martin added.
