UAL and Continental merger leaves rivals in the cold

The United Airlines/Continental merger will leave rival US carriers very few consolidation options, analysts have warned.The merger, which creates the largest airline in the world, leaves carriers such as American Airlines and US Airways without any obvious partners.American has said it will focus on developing international alliances while US Airways’ next move is unknown as it had been in talks with United until Continental muscled in.The new mega airline will have a market value of about US$6.8billion and revenues of about $29billion based on 2009 figuress.It will fly to more than 370 destinations in 59 countries and carry 144 million passengers annually, overtaking Delta and Northwest, which merged last year.
