Marriott International has announced it will open its first hotel in Macedonia. The 180-room Skopje Marriott Hotel is expected to open in early 2013 and will be located in the heart of the capital city centre. The property will be the first managed, internationally branded hotel in Skopje. “This is such an exciting project for us and we are thrilled to announce Marriott’s entrance in to The Balkans,” said Amy McPherson, Marriott’s President & Managing Director for Europe. “We recently announced our growth goal of doubling our portfolio in Europe and by entering new markets like Macedonia we are able to reach new customers and meet a real need in the market. We are confident the Skopje Marriott Hotel will be a success from day one.”Macedonia, with a population of just over two million people, is located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeastern Europe and is bordered by Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. Skopje, Macedonia’s capital city, has a population of approximately 500,000 people and is the hub of business and government activity including boasting a new United States embassy opened in 2009.
