Check Safety First to launch in German

Hotel inspection service, Check Safety First is launching a German version of its website. Originally established in 2004, the company currently audits properties across 26 countries, assessing them on more than 250 control points. Check Safety First, CEO, Mark Harrington, told Travel Daily that the German language website, which will be online within the next fortnight, will be supported by a small team in Stuttgart. “Germany is the second biggest travelling nation after the UK,” he explained. “As the company has grown we felt we needed to expand and this seemed like the next logical step. Meanwhile, we’ve recently added several new destinations to our hotel audit list including Austria, Belgium, Montenegro, Croatia, Bulgaria and Argentina, which was our most recent addition.” Hotels in all countries are independently audited to Western European standards on a monthly basis. The company analyses many aspects of hotels including fire safety, but the main focus is on health and hygiene. “We offer training in hygiene and food handling for hotels that need it,” adds Harrington. “We find that properties in developing nations often employ our services; we teach kitchen staff about standards of hygiene including the importance of cleaning and proper hand washing. We also work with food suppliers for hotels in some cases.” While Check Safety First may expand its training repertoire as the company develops, Harrington points out that hygiene remains the biggest issue for the hotel industry at present. “Some 75% of all issues that Brits have abroad can be linked back to food safety. Food poisoning is very common when people travel abroad.” Contrary to popular belief, a good star rating does not automatically indicate hygienic kitchens. “Many of the three star properties we audit actually come out on top when we analyse food safety; it’s a common mistake for guests to assume the food they eat will be safe just because it’s a five star hotel.”
