Lisbon emerges as MICE destination

Portugal National Tourist Office (PNTO) is marketing Lisbon as an emerging MICE destination following top 10 positions. In 2008 and 2009, the Portuguese capital held the 8th position in the International Congress & Convention Association’s European ranking and officials hope this will increase this year. According to the ranking, business travellers liked the city’s modern infrastructures, proximity to Europe and it was deemed value-for-money. Portugal, and Lisbon in particular, has all the right ingredients for a successful conference, meeting or incentive programme,” explained PNTO Director Miguel Perestrello. “It is blessed with a mild year-round climate, plenty of sunshine, excellent food and wine and some of the finest congress and accommodation facilities anywhere in the world.” The MICE industry accounts for 44% of tourism income for Lisbon and Porto, the Algarve and Madeira have also been noted as part of Portugal’s MICE offering. MICE organisers are encouraged to join the board’s online database for tour operator contacts at www.portugaloffice.co.uk.
