Ireland’s Transport Minister Conor Murphy today launched the Golden Trekker free rail travel initiative for international senior tourists. Under the scheme, which will run through the summer, older visitors from outside Ireland can visit the north of the island to apply for a ticket which will give them a maximum of 14 days unlimited free rail travel. “The Golden Trekker initiative is designed to dovetail with a similar initiative launched in the South earlier this year and we hope that it will encourage overseas tourists to come and see what the North has to offer and explore the local sights,” explained Murphy. “We hope that many will take up this opportunity and explore more of what the north can offer,” added Translink Group CEO Catherine Mason. Tourism Ireland Chief Executive Niall Gibbons said the scheme complemented the board’s Silver Surfer Summer Savings initiative.
