World Travel Market has seen a record number of companies sign up for its World Responsible Tourism Day later this year. The campaign, which runs in conjunction with UNWTO, is designed to inspire and educate the industry to actively help the environment. More than one hundred large and small tourism businesses have applied to use the 2010 WTM WRTD logo, which can be used to mark the day in their own way. Some of the events that have been set up already include press conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs, presentations, fun runs or family activities. “The industry faces extremely difficult and challenging times, not only economically, but also on core issues such as sustainability, climate change, conservation and poverty reduction”, said WTM Chairman Fiona Jeffery. “This is one of the reasons why responsible tourism is becoming fundamental to operators and destinations and why WTM World Responsible Tourism Day has captured so much industry attention worldwide.” The applications are currently being studied to ensure they meet WTM WRTD criteria.
