Railway museum benefits from bank holiday event

Welsh Highland Heritage Railway has seen an 8% rise in visitors through August compared to the same month last year. Staff at the museum in Porthmadog have said that a Welsh dragon-themed event held over the August Bank Holiday helped boost numbers. “It shows how something with a Welsh flavour can be a big draw to visitors,” said WHHR Chairman Martyn Owen. “We hope that it also helps us play our part in the community, by attracting more people to the area and increasing Porthmadog’s status as a holiday destination.” He admitted that visitor numbers had previously been down and the last minute booking trend had created a surge in interest. “We started the summer with visitor numbers which were steady, but down on the same period in previous years” explained Owen. “Then, all of a sudden, we found ourselves rushed off our feet. It’s almost as if many people put off taking their holidays until the very last minute in the hope that the weather might improve towards the end of the summer.”
