Air Astana set to target UK tourists

Air Astana is keen to attract UK tourists to Kazakhstan and work with the British travel trade. The carrier’s Sales and Marketing Executive Prithi Shukla told Travel Daily that while Astana predominantly draws in business travellers, the country is rapidly developing as a leisure destination. “A lot of people are looking for adventure which Kazakhstan can offer,” she explained. “Young people in particular are drawn to the country for its trekking, mountaineering, bird watching activities and Silk road tours.” The airline is currently working with several adventure tour specialists including Explore and Mountain Kingdom and is keen to expand trade relations in the UK. “We offer fam trips for relevant agents and operators where we show them the business and economy services as well as the ground handling operations. In addition we make sure they get a tour of the all the local highlights so they can learn and understand more about the country,” added Shukla. Meanwhile, the carrier has experienced continued growth worldwide, with passenger numbers for the first six months of 2010 increasing by 14% from the previous year.
