Flights to and from Spain were cancelled or disrupted today following a nationwide workers’ strike. British Airways cancelled its morning flights to Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga and advised passengers to check its website for changes to the schedule. “If customers don’t wish to fly to or from Spain during the strike, even if their flight is still planned to operate, then they can also rebook to a later date free of charge,” said a spokesperson. “We will also be putting on larger aircraft to maximise the number of customers we can carry.” Iberia claimed to fly 35% of its flights, although it had warned customers before and pre-booked them. In addition, Ryanair cancelled all Spanish domestic flights and most of its international schedule, while easyJet scrapped half of operations. The country’s train network was also affected after 80% of high-speed trains were cancelled and mid-ranged journeys were stopped. Meanwhile travellers faced flight disruption in Belgium and rail strikes in Greece as Europe fights back against austerity cuts.
