High-speed rail link confirmed

Secretary of State Philip Hammond confirmed today that a high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham has been given the financial go-ahead. The service, which will not commence until 2025, will shorten journey time between the cities and continue to Manchester and Leeds. ABTA welcomed the decision but warned it should not ‘come at the cost of air travel’. “A 21st century high speed rail network will be a very welcome addition to our public transport network,” said ABTA’s Head of Public Affairs Luke Pollard. “It will not however replace the need for efficient and modern airport infrastructure, particularly for international travel. Philip Hammond says that his Government has no issue with particular modes of transport but does with carbon emissions. We call on his Government to recognise the essential role of aviation for both business and leisure.”
