Tourism Ireland’s first social media campaign has enjoyed huge success, attracting a plethora of celebrity tweets. Amongst those tweeting their Irish connections were the likes of Lord Alan Sugar, Eamonn Holmes and Boy George. Under the ‘My Irish 140’ campaign, previously reported in Travel Daily, Tourism Ireland asked people to Tweet [#makemeirish] ‘What makes them Irish’. Eamonn Holmes tweeted: “MyIrish140.com Great campaign! Tweet your ‘Irish connection’ today to win a 140-hour adventure in Ireland. Get Tweetin’! #makemeirish.” Even legendary 80’s rapper MC Hammer was enjoying the ‘craic’, using Tourism Ireland’s ‘My Irish 140’ campaign to reveal his unexpected Irish roots. “Charles O. Finley (RIP) took me under his wing at 10yrs old and mentored me like a Father #makesmeirish.” Other celebrities tweeting the influence of the Emerald Isle were Big Brother’s Brian Dowling, boxer Wayne Mcullough, Blue Peter’s Zoe Salmon, and BBC Sports Personality of the Year nominee and Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell. “When most people think of Ireland’s contribution to the world of music they think of U2, Boyzone or Westlife, but now thanks to Tourism Ireland’s MyIrish140 campaign we can add MC Hammer to the list,” said Ian Bates, creative director of Indicia, which initiated the campaign. During the campaign’s 140 hours running time, 4,389 #makesmeirish tweets were recorded, over 1,000 individuals tweeted and over 850 people followed myIrish140.
