airBaltic to connect Riga to Budapest

Latvian-based carrier airBaltic is to begin a four times weekly service from Riga to the Hungarian capital. Leaving from North Hub Riga, the first flight will take off on 16 May and will fly every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The route will be operated by a 76 seat Bombardier Q400 Nextgen aircraft and the new flights will provide passengers travelling via the central European aviation hub of Budapest with improved transit connections to destinations in Scandinavia, Russia and the CIS. “We are anticipating around 24,000 passengers will use the service in the first year,” said Kam Jandu, aviation spokesperson for Budapest Airport. “This is an important connection with the Baltic states and provides local passengers with the opportunity to connect with a wider selection of Scandinavian cities, as well as other destinations in northern Europe and the CIS.” airBaltic’s chief commercial officer Tero Taskila added: “airBaltic customers, when asked about preferred destinations in Central Europe, have always requested Budapest, and we are delighted to now open this new route.”
