Falkland Islands population ‘doubles’ on record cruise day

Cruise ship travellers visiting the Falkland Islands almost doubled the islands’ ‘population’ on a record arrival day. Passengers from Crystal Symphony, Star Princess and Infinity carried 5, 409 people to Stanley port on 2 February, beating the previous record of 4, 053 guests on 6 February 2009. Around 2,600 people live in Stanley, with another few hundred dotted around the islands.  “This new record comes as the Falklands are anticipating a positive forecast for the 2010/11 cruise season as a whole,” said Paul Trowell, general manager of the Falkland Islands Tourist Board. “Passengers numbers expected to rise to just over 49,000 per year, up 1.3% on 2009/10.
