British day-trippers boost Montserrat tourist figures

The Caribbean island of Montserrat has become a popular day trip  destination for British tourists, its latest tourism figures show. Montserrat Tourist Board (MTB) has revealed that 216 British passport holders visited the island between January and July 2010, up from 68 in 2009. A total of 1, 029 trips were made. “We are very heartened by these optimistic tourism numbers for 2010, especially since the tourism sector in Montserrat has had some difficult years,” said Ernestine Cassell, director of tourism at MTB. “We have an excellent tourism product to offer the discerning and adventurous traveller and we are committed to our product development initiatives on the island, in order to ensure further development of the tourism sector, and even more visitors for 2011.” Montserrat was battered by hurricane Hugo in 1989 and the southern region was covered in ash when the Soufri
