Costa Cruises and Fairmont pledge support for Earth Hour 2011

Costa Cruises and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts have announced that they will both participate in WWF’s Earth Hour 2011. On 26 March at 8.30pm, Costa’s entire fleet of 14 ships and its head office in Genoa will switch off their lights for 60 minutes (in line with safety procedures, of course). The event will also be celebrated onboard with a candlelit dinner in the ships’ restaurants. Costa is an official partner of WWF Italia to protect the Mediterranean Sea and has collaborated with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission since 2005. In addition, some of its ships are equipped with ‘cold ironing’ so it receives electrical power from the shoreside in port and its generators can be shut down. Meanwhile, Fairmont has announced that its 64 hotels and resorts will also turn their lights for Earth Hour. “Climate change impacts us all and is an issue we must address collectively,” said Chris Cahill, president of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. “We continually encourage our hotels to be innovative with their energy conservation efforts and offer creative ‘green’ programming that our guests and colleagues can participate in year-round.”
