Graduate interest in tourism careers soars

Hospitality, tourism and sports sectors are witnessing an increase in graduate applications, according to a student jobs website. The number of students viewing jobs and careers in these sectors has increased 180 percent compared to last year on prospects.ac.uk. Mike Hill, chief executive of Graduate Prospects thinks the increase is due to students ‘widening their net’ in prospective careers. “Graduates recognise that the service industry is one sector that is faring well in the present climate and are therefore considering it as an area where there may be more vacancies and opportunities,” said Hill. “People graduating with highly vocational degrees in markets that are not quite so buoyant will be particularly focused on exploring alternatives – looking for jobs that don’t require specific qualifications. The hospitality, tourism and sport industry is a good example, offering many roles that are open to a wide range of graduates despite their qualifications.”  Marketing, advertising and PR was the second highest growth sector at 126 percent, followed by health and social care (125 percent up) and the environment and conservation (up 124 percent).
