Portsmouth and Leixoes welcome first cruise ships

Two new cruise ports in Europe welcomed their first ship calls this week as passengers push cruise lines to embark from and visit more ports. Portsmouth’s cruise terminal opened last week and is said to have helped boost the already popular ex-UK cruise market. “Portsmouth provides an excellent embarkation point for our summer cruises and we are already seeing an increase in interest and sales of our new summer 2012 itineraries travelling in and out of Portsmouth,” said Roger Allard, executive chairman of All Leisure Holidays. Meanwhile in Portugal, Leixoes will receive its first ship visit tomorrow by Fred. Olsen’s Boudicca. The new cruise quay allows passengers to visit nearby Oporto and there will be celebrations and souvenirs handed out in the dock during the day. “We are delighted that Boudicca will be the first cruise ship to berth at the new Cruise Quay,” said Matt Grimes, director of planning, ports and logistics for Fred. Olsen. “As the leading cruise visitor to Leixoes, we are delighted to have been asked to inaugurate the new facilities and are greatly looking forward to the celebrations.”
