Europe hotel industry reports 7% spending growth, UK up 10%

Europe’s hotel sector recorded a 7% increase in consumer spend last year due to an increase in luxury travel and the return of business travel. Data from American Express Business Insights showed that the UK has seen the highest growth at 10%, followed by France (7%) and Germany (4%) and there had generally been a 4% year-on-year rise in hotel spending in this year’s first quarter. Levels in the named three countries are said to have returned to 2008 levels but not at its peak. “This strong growth is great news in an environment where consumer confidence remains low and economic growth fragile,” said Sujata Bhatia, vice president for AmEx Business Insights Europe and Asia. “This is particularly true in the UK, where international visitors are spending again, making a significant contribution to the UK’s economic recovery.”
