London Southend Airport is to become an international airport next summer after easyJet announced it will be operating from the base. The airline will fly to 10 European destinations from the airport including Barcelona, Faro and Ibiza from April 2012. It will base three A319s at the airport and tickets will be on sale at the end of July. “Through offering easy and affordable travel, we expect the new routes to appeal to customers in Essex and London looking for a convenient new departure point for many top European destinations,” said Catherine Lynn, customer and revenue director at easyJet. “We also believe that the European city links will also attract a high number of inbound business and leisure passengers to London next year.” The airport’s train station also provides direct services to the 2012 Olympics site in Stratford. London Southend Airport will open this autumn.
