Sandals launches reading voluntourism programme

Sandals Resorts has launched a reading voluntourism programme in conjunction with its charity The Sandals Foundation. The scheme is known as Reading Road Trip and will allow clients to visit schools in the local community for two hours in order to improve pupils’ literacy skills through reading activities. The programme is an extension of Sandals’ school adoption policy and is available to guests at all Sandals, Beaches and Grand Pineapple resorts. “The chance to ‘give back’ has been a customer request for some time, so we are thrilled to finally be able to offer our guests the opportunity to take part in the work we consider so vitally important,” said Adam Stewart, CEO of Sandals Resorts International and president of the Sandals Foundation’s board of directors. The trips will cost US$20 per person including transportation and supplies and guests are encouraged to donate a new or good-as-new book to the school’s library. “It’s an extraordinary thing to connect with the people of a place; to know them and to make a real difference in their lives,” said Stewart. “This is our first step into developing programming that allows our guests to do just that.”
