Car hire firms send out warnings ahead of summer holidays

Car hire insurance companies have warned customers to take extra care in Europe this year after the UK’s most popular holiday destinations were named as the worst for insurance claims. Spain, Portugal, Italy and France are said to account for 50% of all Insurance4carhire claims in 2010 for accidents, damage or theft. “Driving rules and regulations are put in place for the benefit and safety of all travellers and it is essential that you research all parts of a journey – including the relevant stages of hiring a car,” said Simeon Linstead, managing director of Insurance4carhire. “We would always recommend being prepared for the worst. Extra care should always be taken when driving a car in Europe – Particularly in Italy where our claims are highest.” Meanwhile, carrentals.co.uk has hit back against schemes that encourage car owners to hire out their vehicle to other drivers. “For the motorist renting out their car, it may be okay if there’s no emotional attachment there, but the reality is that few people will look after a rental car as well as their own,” warned Gareth Robinson, managing director of Carrentals.co.uk. “For the person doing the renting, you can generally get a new rental car for a similar price to these schemes. You know the vehicle has been maintained and you’re dealing with a company with no emotional attachment to the vehicle.”
