Australian passports recognise third gender

The Australian government is introducing a third genderto its passport application. The third class, called ‘indiscriminate’, isintended to provide an option to transgender people.

Making the announcement onThursday, the government announced that transgender people and those ofambiguous sex can list their gender as ‘X’, but will need a doctor’s note tosupport their claim.

Government senator, Louise Pratt, whose partner was born female and is nowidentified as a man, supports the new policy. She called it a major improvementfor travellers who face questioning and detention in airports because theirappearances do not match their gender status.
