Puerto Princesa, Philippines, is prepping for a massinflux of tourists after its inclusion in the New7Wonders of Nature list lastweek. Its nomination and short-listing has already raised the destination’sprofile significantly after the destination was recognised for its undergroundriver.
According to Edward Hagedorn , mayor of Puerto Princesa,the number of tourists more than doubled since the river became an officialentry to draw four years ago. “When we started in 2007, we only had around160,000 tourists. But last year, we registered around 425,000. That’s really abig jump,” Hagedorn told ANC.
However the city is not yet ready to accommodate theswell of visitors expected in the near future. Development is already underwayas hoteliers try to expand the city’s room inventory, and Puerto Princesa hasthe largest hotel development pipeline in the country. With a three-year plancurrently underway, authorities hope to meet potential demand for rooms once itis compete.
