The Victoria city of Ballarat, Australia, has recorded substantial increases in international visitors over the last year. According to the latest National Visitor Survey data, international visitors on a day-tip to Ballarat increased by 10.5% to 144,000 this financial year, while international overnight stays were up 34.7% to 20,800. Speaking to the Courier Mail, Ballarat Regional Tourism Director George Sossi said the bulk of day-trippers were from China and he expects more to follow in the years to come, adding; “We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of the Chinese market yet.”
Patterns in domestic tourism changed over this period. Ballarat’s domestic day-tripper market dropped 2.7%, down from 1,432,000 visitors to 1,393,000 from 2010 to 2011, but domestic visitor nights were up 8.9% for the year.
