Chinese visitors drive international tourism in Ballarat

The Victoria city of Ballarat, Australia, has recorded substantial increases in international visitors over the last year. According to the latest National Visitor Survey data, international visitors on a day-tip to Ballarat increased by 10.5% to 144,000 this financial year, while international overnight stays were up 34.7% to 20,800. Speaking to the Courier Mail, Ballarat Regional Tourism Director George Sossi said the bulk of day-trippers were from China and he expects more to follow in the years to come, adding; “We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of the Chinese market yet.”

Patterns in domestic tourism changed over this period. Ballarat’s domestic day-tripper market dropped 2.7%, down from 1,432,000 visitors to 1,393,000 from 2010 to 2011, but domestic visitor nights were up 8.9% for the year.
