Calls for government support for green tourism in Aus

Eco-tourism Australia (EA) has called on the central government to offer more support to tourism businesses applying best practice initiatives as they try to respond to climate change.

In reference to “climate change fatigue”, EA Chief Kym Cheatham told the Australian Associated Press; “Travellers need compelling reasons to visit and travel within Australia. But there is not one project within a government tourism department in Australia to support and build the profile of the environmentally sustainable tourism operators who are world leaders in this regard.”

Australia was once a leader in eco-tourism, but now it lags behind New Zealand, which topped the perception and performance index for tourism in the Global Green Economy Index.
