Airport traffic is recovering in Bangkok

Passenger traffic and flight movements at Bangkok’s main airport are expected to return to normal by New Year, according to a Thai aviation official. Marisa Pongpattanapun, Chairwoman of the Airline Operators Committee (AOC), told the Bangkok Post; “We ought to see the traffic bouncing back shortly. Passenger sentiment is improving as Thailand dries out and concerns about Suvarnabhumi possibly flooding are gradually allayed.”

Air traffic slumped by about 20% in recent weeks due to the protracted flooding crisis in outlying areas of the Thai capital. Daily passenger volume at Suvarnabhumi Airport fell to 100,000 from usual levels of 130,000 passengers. Aircraft movements also fell from 900 to 800 flights per day as airlines cut back capacity in response to weakening demand, triggered by foreign governmental travel warnings which have since been rescinded.
