India opposes EU carbon tax at WTM

India’s Tourism Minister, Subodh Kant Sahai used the recent World Travel Market (WTM) in London to speak out about the EU’s proposed carbon tax. The Minister left his European counterparts in no doubt about the country’s position that the tax was arbitrary and would lead to a serious increase in the ticket prices of long-haul flights from India. Under the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), airlines flying to Europe will be required to purchase permits to allow them to emit additional carbon dioxide above a predetermined cap. Airline operators and travel agents fear that the proposed tax would lead to the Delhi-London ticket price going up by at least INR2,000 per person per trip.
