Viking Ocean moves new-builds to Fincantieri

Viking Ocean Cruises , sister company to the fast growing river cruise line Viking River Cruises have signed  a Memorandum of Agreement with Italy’s Fincantieri Shipyards for the construction of two new luxury ocean cruise ships. The memorandum also provides for an option to build a third vessel.

The new 45,000 GRT ton ships will boast 499 cabins and carry 998 guests, which by today’s standards are small, but are aligned to Viking’s intimate destination-focused approach to cruising. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in late 2014, second one in late 2015.

“We started Viking River Cruises to offer great destination experiences, and we are excited to bring this same destination focus back to ocean cruising,” said Torsten Hagen, chairman of Viking
