Virgin Holidays’ concessions in popular supermarkets and department stores have boosted the demand for long-haul travel in the towns they are based, according to its sales and distribution director Christopher Roe.
Speaking at the Elite Travel Group conference on Saturday, Roe said its stands in House of Fraser, Tesco, Debenhams and now Sainsbury’s may appear empty at times but only as its staff may be out leafleting or promoting its holidays.
With no emphasis on where to book, Roe said the promotion had directly boosted long-haul travel in the respective towns for all travel agents.
During his speech Roe also faced criticism for travel agents over its 5% online discount. He defended the discount saying it was not available for all holidays and even its own concessions had to compete with it. He urged agents to look at “price over percentage” as it finalises a new deal with Elite.
