Algarve sees golf boost

60% of golf tour operators saw a rise in bookings in 2011

The Portuguese area of Algarve has seen golf tourism boom with 16 new golf courses opening up in the region, it has revealed.

According to António Pina, president of the Algarve Tourism Board golf tourism now represents 12% of the region’s tourism revenue and has seen a 20% increase in the number of rounds played since 1999.

It comes as the Algarve prepares to host the International Golf Travel Market 2012 next month.

“With 75% of the country’s rounds of golf being played in the Algarve, and 90% of those rounds being played by visitors, the decision to host IGTM a second time reflects the crucial role tourism plays in the region and its overall contribution to the Portuguese economy,” said Pina.
