Hawaiian Airlines today launched its inaugural flight from Honolulu to Sapporo, marking the first direct connection between the two cities for almost a decade.

The airline will operate three weekly flights on the route, departing Hawaii on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and returning from Sapporo the following day. Flights will operate using a two-class, 264-seat Boeing 767-300ER.

Sapporo becomes Hawaiian’s fourth destination in Japan, following Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. All four routes, along with flights to Seoul, have been launched over the past two years as the airline embarks on a major expansion into Asia.

“We are delighted to be restoring the convenience of nonstop service to Hawaii for travelers in Hokkaido and look forward to bringing increasing numbers of visitors from the region to our island home,” said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s President & CEO. “At the same time, we know that many of our customers in Hawaii and North America with an affinity for Japan will take the opportunity of this new service to experience the unique sites and cultural attractions of northern Japan.”

Sapporo is the capital city of the island of Hokkaido and the fourth-largest city in Japan with a population of 1.9 million. It is a popular destination for winter sports tourists.
