Mumbai wildlife census cancelled

The annual wildlife census in the Mumbai and Thane region will not take place this year, in favour of a new survey technique. The headcount usually takes place in May every year, but according to a Times of India report, a new density estimation survey was conducted – a process jointly developed by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). This covered areas including the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary and Karnala Bird Sanctuary. The new survey method – believed to be more scientific and accurate – is used in tiger reserves and national parks across the country.
