Captain Schettino’s lover was with him when Costa Concordia struck the coast of Italy last year, the court has heard.
Moldovan dancer Domnica Cemortan has admitted to being Schettino’s lover and that she was with him on the bridge when he oversaw the close sail-past, according to BBC News.
Cemortan said she had dined with the captain on the night of the incident and then accompanied him to the bridge.
Local press have speculated Schettino may have been distracted by her presence.
Schettino could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter and abandoning ship in January 2012, which resulted in 32 people killed.
Around 1,000 passengers and crew are due to give evidence in the trial, which previously heard Schettino blame his helmsman for steering the ship to close to the shore.
This week the ship’s matire d’ Antonello Tievoli said he asked the captain to sail close to the Giglio island because he had family there, which the captain obliged on 6 January but reportedly said was not close enough.
The closer route plotted by the helmsman resulted in the Concordia hitting the rocks, which has only recently been moved upright again.
