The government of the Indian state of Maharashtra has ruled out any more monorail projects.

The state, which includes the city of Mumbai, had previously outlined plans for a multiple new light rail projects, including lines connecting Mumbai with Thane.

But the Economic Times reported state officials as saying this week that these projects, and any future developments, have now been shelved.

“There was a proposal for a monorail from Thane to Kalyan and Bhiwandi, and also a line from Thane to Wadala. However, all those plans have been scrapped. There won’t be any new monorail projects,” the newspaper quoted an unnamed “top official” with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as saying.

Mumbai’s existing monorail network comprises a single line, running from Chembur, in the east of the city, to Wadala.
