Tibet Airlines has been authorised to launch international flights.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) confirmed last week that the Lhasa-based airline, which is part-owned by Air China, has been cleared to expand its operations to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, plus international flights to “nearby countries”.

Tibet Airlines launched its first flight in July 2011 and has since built a network of routes within mainland China, from its bases in Lhasa and Chengdu.

It currently operates a fleet of 12 Airbus A319 aircraft, but plans to expand to 40 aircraft by 2020.
